Co-executive produced by Mustafa and Dylan Wiggins (RosalÃa, Justin Bieber), the album features contributions from Turnstile's Brendan Yates, Dev Hynes, Daniel Caesar, Mustafa, dexter in the newsagent and Taylor Skye of Jockstrap. As evidenced by its impressive list of collaborators, 'Dream Fatigue' represents a shift away from the reclusive manner in which the British artist has historically made his bodies of work and showcases the manner in which his greatest strengths are highlighted through embracing community. "To let people in is to let them take the thing out of you as well," he says of how collaboration has only strengthened his sound.
"Grandma Song" arrives alongside a lyric video featuring Rex against a sweeping fireworks display in Montana. In tandem with the previously released "Indecision" featuring Daniel Caesar, the new single showcases the confident, direct songwriting and emotional candour that first won over fans when Rex broke onto the scene nearly a decade ago.
The connection between old songs and new has been on full display this summer, with "Grandma Song" already teased during a series of intimate fan house shows across the UK, Ireland, and Southeast Asia. Giving fans the rare opportunity to shape their own personalised setlists from a catalogue spanning nearly a decade, the living-room shows have brought Rex's music back to its most intimate setting while offering an early glimpse into what's next. In Southeast Asia, the shows quickly went viral, sparking a wave of fan excitement and social buzz across the region, with stops in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Manila, and Jakarta, alongside headline performances at LaLaLa Festival in Manila and Jakarta. The fan house shows continue across Europe.
Dream Fatigue' took shape on the move, with Rex writing across New York, Toronto, Rome, Egypt, Ethiopia, and LA, often armed with little more than a laptop and portable speakers. Marking a radical departure from his old process, most of these songs were born on guitar, resulting in a collection of classic songwriting, gentle melodies, curious hooks, and distinctive production. He says of the record: "I want fans to experience the music in the same way it was made, on the move, just me & a guitar, in intimate settings." Moving beyond autobiography, the album follows a protagonist who adopts different personas in an attempt to win over the girl he loves, an idea reflected in playful song titles including "Hannah Montana", "Iron Man", and "Elvis", ultimately giving it its name. "This guy is tired of dreaming and becoming all these people in the pursuit of that dream," explains Rex.
With the 'Dream Fatigue' era bringing together a circle of longtime collaborators and new creative connections, that sense of community has come into focus in recent weeks. The result is the unmistakable sound of artists at the peak of their powers, first glimpsed as Rex and Brendan Yates debuted the album cut "Elvis" at an intimate underplay performance at London's Village Underground, just ahead of All Points East. At All Points East, Rex welcomed Ravyn Lenae to perform their remix of "Love Me Not", before joining Tyler, The Creator the following night for "Boredom" from 'Flower Boy'. Days later, Daniel Caesar invited Rex onstage at his sold-out O2 Arena show to perform "Indecision", the first taste of 'Dream Fatigue', released in August.
