Freeway presents National Artist Levi Celerio

On its continuous effort in upbringing the rich culture and heritage of our country, Freeway pays tribute to another national artist for the 7th time through their National Artists Collector's Series. And this time, the spotlight is on to our National Artist for Music, Mr. Levi Celerio.

In the past years,  National Artists Collector's Series featured National Artists Nick Joaquin (Literature), Ang Kiukok (Visual Arts), Jose Garcia Villa (Literature), Ramon Valera (Fashion Design), F. Sionil José (Literature) and Vicente Manansala (Visual Arts). For the coming Fall 2012, Freeway features the works of National Artist for Music, Levi Celerio, in a collection of wonderfully crafted women outfits perfect for all fun-loving and sophisticated metropolis women.

Held last June 4th at The Row, Glorietta 5, Freeway gathered both fashion and music enthusiasts, media and bloggers, and the family and friends of Mr. Levi Celerio to celebrate the life and works of the Filipino music prodigy.

Known for being a good lyricist, Mang Levi's songs cherish life, convey nationalistic sentiments and utter grand philosophies. Celerio wrote more than 4,000 songs, among them are popular pieces, which many consider to be immortal. Some of his popular love songs include: Saan Ka Man Naroroon?, Kahit Konting Pagtingin, Gaano Ko Ikaw Kamahal, Kapag Puso'y Sinugatan, and Ikaw, O Maliwanag na Buwan, Dahil Sa Isang Bulaklak, Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, Bagong Pagsilang, and Sapagkat Kami'y Tao Lamang, while his folk songs include Ang Pipit, Tinikling, Tunay na Tunay, Itik-Itik, Waray-Waray, Pitong Gatang, Ako ay May Singsing, Alibangbang, Alembong, Galawgaw, Caprichosa, Ang Tapis ni Inday, Dungawin Mo Hirang, Umaga na Neneng, Ikaw Kasi, and Basta't Mahal Kita. Celerio also wrote nationalistic songs such as Ang Bagong Lipunan, Lupang Pangarap, and Tinig ng Bayan.

That night, aside from presenting the clothes were inspired by the works of Mr. Levi Celerio, Freeway also had the Asia’s Queen of Songs, Ms. Pilita Corrales, who glittered the night with her spectacle musical performance featuring Levi Celerio’s songs.

The event was hosted by former Freeway endorser, Giselle Tongi, who was joined by special guest Dr. Antonio Hila, cultural historian and a music critic. Dr. Hila shared to us interesting trivia about Mang Levi and his dedication and intense love for music.

I must say that I'm lucky I was able to witness how Mr. Levi Celerio paved his way. I'm not saying that I'm that old, but seeing him performing on TV then was one of the many heart-warming things that I was able to see and hear and feel. They way he played his leaf creating one of the most heart-warming Filipino songs, Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, was a sure-fire classic that any Filipino would appreciate no matter how old or young you are. And with that, I'm really thankful and proud that we had a guy like Mr. Levi Celerio who made OPM closer to our hearts.
