Building on the magnetic vulnerability of her previous singles, “The wolf,”
“You could break my heart,” and “Sleeptalking,” “Turtleneck” invites listeners
into Maddie’s dreamy indie-pop realm. Anchored by Maddie’s crystalline vocals,
the track weaves a delicate tapestry of shimmering melodies and introspective
lyrics.
At its core, “Turtleneck” is a poignant exploration of post-breakup disorientation—the kind of emotional limbo where the past feels safer than the present. “‘Turtleneck’ is about how lost you can get after getting out of a relationship,” Maddie shares. “It’s tempting to ground yourself in the memory of what was, rather than accepting what is.” The track’s whimsical yet raw soundscape perfectly mirrors this tension, pulling listeners into a world where hope and heartbreak intertwine.
Originally from Toronto and now living in New York City, Maddie Regent discovered her passion for songwriting at just 12 years old, using music as a powerful outlet to navigate her anxieties and give voice to her innermost thoughts. Since her debut in 2021, Maddie has released two beloved EPs, MISS REGENT and Girl of Your Dreams, and has earned recognition from tastemakers like Atwood Magazine and EARMILK. Her unique blend of introspective lyrics and infectious indie-pop melodies has established her as a refreshing voice in the indie-pop scene.
Working hand-in-hand with her partner, producer, and songwriter Cade Hoppe, Maddie has meticulously honed her craft, creating a sound that effortlessly marries catchy pop hooks with raw, unfiltered storytelling. Now, armed with her most ambitious project yet—her debut album, On the phone with my mom—Maddie Regent is poised to make 2025 her breakout year.
