October 15 is 5th Global Handwashing Day!

We all know how millions of children around the world are exposed to harmful bacteria that cause diseases, and here in the Philippines, the Filipino youth who usually get their hands dirty from playing to touching objects, contaminate themselves by germs, elements that pose serious threats to their health like diarrhea and respiratory ailments. Worst case, records shows that due to these ailments, 3.5 million kids worldwide lose their lives due to these preventable diseases.

That's why with the help of some private organization, including Unilever, a nationwide program was created not just to keep these kids from diseases but to also save their lives - Global Handwashing Day.

And together with international partners UNICEF and the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW), Global Handwashing Day was created to promote the importance of handwashing. They say a clean hand saves lives and this simple act of handwashing with soap is the best and most cost-efficient way to rescue children from a gloomy fate.

Vaseline, a leading health and beauty brand,  continues to champion the health of children as it celebrates this year’s Global Handwashing Day today. But through the overwhelming support of Paco Catholic School, Unilever employees and the Manila City government, Global Handwashing already kicked off last Saturday, October 13, where 1,000 children joined in this grand handwashing day and pledged to make handwashing a  commitment.

In line with this Global Handwashing Day, Vaseline is launching the awareness campaign Pledge Hands to Save Lives, a movement aims to educate 500,000 kids all over the country on proper handwashing, on top of the 350,000 kids it has helped for the previous four years.

Through its partnership with Knowledge Channel, the Department of Education and Department of Social Welfare and Development, Vaseline will also educate hundreds of thousands of children as it visits more than 300 schools nationwide.

On its press conference last week at Makati Shangri-La Hotel, Jillian Ward demonstrated to us the proper way of washing  hands through a step-by-step process. She is really adorable!

Vaseline staff, including Apples Aberin (whom, I didn't know is part of Vaseline PR team) discussed to us their upcoming campaign that ask our participation.

If you wanna be part of the pledge to save lives, just go to “I Pledge My Hand to Save a Life” website www.pledgeyourhands.com. Vaseline encourages everyone to make a pledge of teaching another kid on proper and regular washing of hands with soap. You can also your families and friends photos and videos about handwashing via Vaseline Facebook page www.facebook.com/Vaseline.

Unilever’s Vice-President for Corporate Affairs, Mr. Chito Macapagal shared to us that they are so glad with the increasing number of partners, because they can now feel how everyone is taking handwashing seriously. And through Unilever products, they will keep to be inspired to strengthen their commitment to care for their consumers especially children.

The Global Handwashing Day is part of Unilever’s global advocacy under its “Billion Better Lives” program, which seeks to help one billion people worldwide improve their health and well-being by 2012.

Pick-up you butt now, and teach a kid now on the proper washing of hands!

Stay healthy, everyone!
